Our notebook / Purpose and method

Why We Begin with Observation

Unused space invites imagination. We think it should invite a careful look first.

Atticuriojollypigen.cfd is an independent informational website about attic condition, practical storage and realistic home renovation. Its purpose is to help curious homeowners ask better questions before adding weight, covering a defect or committing to a conversion.

We follow a simple sequence: safe access, visible condition, intended purpose, then possibilities. That order matters. A beautiful rooflight cannot resolve an unsafe stair, and a tidy storage platform cannot make an unsuitable structure adequate.

Possibility is more useful when it has been measured against the building.

What the notebook offers

Observation without overclaiming

We distinguish a visible clue from a diagnosis. Stains, cracks and odours may justify investigation, but a general article cannot establish their cause.

Systems before shopping lists

Storage, insulation, ventilation, services and structure interact. Our guides explain those connections rather than presenting a product as a universal fix.

Clear points for professional help

Unsafe access, moisture, structural concerns, suspect materials and changes of use require suitably qualified advice. We do not provide surveys, engineering designs, certification or emergency assistance.

References and geographical limits

The guides use selected UK examples, with English Approved Documents identified as such. Requirements elsewhere differ. Standards, guidance and permissions should always be checked in their current form for the actual location and proposal.

Useful starting points include the government's Approved Documents collection, RICS, Historic England, the Energy Saving Trust and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Other references in the guides include BSI standards, PAS 2035 and the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. Mentioning an organisation or standard does not imply endorsement, affiliation or a compliance assessment.

How to read the illustrations

The soft-lit renders are conceptual illustrations. They are not photographs of surveyed properties, approved engineering plans or examples certified to comply with regulations. Do not infer safe spans, load capacity, clearances or construction details from an image.

If wording is unclear or a reference needs attention, send the page address and a concise explanation through the contact page. Please do not include sensitive documents or treat a message as a request for urgent property advice.
